Beacon Power Services has partnered with ZESCO for a project in Zambia. This initiative focuses on integrating smart meter technology, which will significantly enhance grid monitoring, improve outage detection, and streamline billing processes.
This project is structured into three key phases. First, the team will map existing electrical assets—including meters, poles, and transformers—to establish accurate records of every customer connection. Next, smart meters will be strategically installed to capture real-time data for better network performance monitoring. Finally, the project will transition customers to a new digital billing platform to ensure accuracy and efficiency in invoicing.
Smart meters provide immediate visibility into energy consumption and grid performance. The real-time data not only facilitates rapid identification of outages or network issues but also supports data-driven decision-making for maintenance and operational improvements. This capability is crucial for minimizing unplanned downtime and optimizing the overall performance of the network.
Beyond the installation of smart meters, the project includes significant infrastructure upgrades. A comprehensive mapping of electrical networks ensures that every asset is accounted for and integrated into the new system. In parallel, transitioning to a digital billing system will eliminate manual errors, enhance billing precision, and improve revenue protection through accurate tracking of power usage.
The primary objective of this pilot is to achieve a measurable improvement in service reliability.
Key performance indicators include:
- Digital invoicing ensures accurate billing and reduces revenue losses.
- Reduced unplanned outages through faster detection and resolution of faults.
- Improved maintenance response through enhanced grid monitoring for timely repairs.

Through this partnership on this smart meter rollout, Beacon Power Services and ZESCO are making significant strides in modernizing the power grid. This initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to using technology to improve operational efficiency and customer service. The results of this project will act as a standard for future advancements in grid reliability and overall energy management across Zambia.
